TO - RUBBLE

Taoping ancient Qiang Village lies just 20 kilometres away from the epicenter of the Wenchuan earthquake.

Yu Xingmei - a member of the Qiang ethnic group,

still- remembers the scene clearly.

Yet- the only damage suffered

by- the village

was- to the parapet wall

on- top of the ancient watch tower.

However, the main body of the village, and even the 2-meter-wide lanes and the underground water network, survived intact.

Not- one of the Qiang houses

and- watch towers collapsed.

The first sight visitors get of Taoping Village is of three ancient Qiang watch towers standing abreast.

Against- the light,

the- 3 towers

look- like 3 pillars

rising- up to the sky.

They - like the ancient & delicate Qiang houses

that- surround them,

withstood- the onslaught

of - the earthquake.

So, how exactly did the ancient village survive

the great earthquake?

And- can the architects of today

learn- anything from the secrets

of- the ancient Qiang builders?

China is a country of many nationalitieS

In the great Chinese family, the Qiang people are one of the most ancient nationalities.

Oracle bone inscriptions from 3,000 years ago record that the Qiang people were living mainly in Northwest China and the Central Plains.

Later, a branch of the nationality was incorporated into the Tibetan ethnic group, and another into the Han Nationality.

The Qiang people today are the descendants of the ancient Qiang Nationality.

Theirs - was a turbulent history

before- they finally settled

in- the area

of- the Minjiang River and Minshan Mountain.

The earliest TaopingQiang Village was built over 2,000 years ago, in 111 B.C.

Taoping- is a typical Qiang village,

it- was built with mountains to the north

and- facing water to the south.

The- buildings are laid out according to a rigid design.

Built- of stone, they embody a structural hierarchy.

The- houses are called Zhuang Houses, or WoZhe in the Qiang language.

The ancient Qiang village has 8 gates radiating from the watch tower.

The- 8 gates

are- linked to 13 alleys,

which- form a comprehensive communications network.

The village also has a network of groundwater, which uses covered wells.

People- can remove the slate covers to draw water from the wells.

The- alleys, groundwater network and roofs combine to- form a comprehensive defence system.

After surviving the wind, rain & earthquakes for the past 2,000 years,

Taoping- ancient Qiang Village - still stands proud.

It is known as a wonder in the history of architecture.

Its- also known as

the- Mysterious Fortress of the East

and- the most intact Living Fossil

of-  ancient Qiang architecture.

In surviving the earthquake,

Taoping Village- is indebted

to- its unique landform and topography.

If seismic waves move along a mountain range,

which- part of the mountain, the top,

the- valley or the mountainside,

can - best withstand the force?

Interestingly - in the Qiang village,

some- of the buildings

are- situated on the mountain top

and- some on the mountainside.

But none are built in the valley.

So, why did the Qiang people ignore the broad and even valley with its abundant arable land?

The - first reason was,

the - difficulty in defending the valley.

However, they gradually discovered there were other advantages associated with their choice,

and - the tradition developed

among - the ancient Qiang people

of - living in stone houses

located - beside mountains.

Traditional - Qiang villages

were - often built

on - a steep mountainside

or - at the mountains top,

instead- of on the flood plains

beside-  a river.

BECAUSE OF THIS, THE QIANG NATIONALITY

WERE - POPULARLY KNOWN

AS - THE PEOPLE

ABOVE - THE CLOUDS

Taoping ancient Qiang Village is located on a mountainside.

The Zagunao River, the main tributary of the Minjiang, runs eastward across the village.

Thanks to its location, the village is protected from the northerly wind in the winter

and- receives adequate sunshine.

More importantly, the broad and gentle terraces mitigate the effects -

of - the major earthquakes

that - strike the area

once - every few decades.

When seismic waves move forward along the mountain range,

the - valley

and - the mountain top

receive - the impact first

The valley, with its broad expanse of soft and flat land,

absorbs - the force

of - the earthquake

and - deadens

its - power,

which significantly reduces the impact on the mountainside.

Even - buildings

made - of reinforced concrete

collapsed - during the earthquake.

So, was there something miraculous about the construction materials used in the Taoping ancient Qiang Village?

Its use as a building material has been a key factor in the Taoping ancient Qiang Villages survival of 2,000 years of earthquakes.

So Qiang people use the locally-available rubble and loess as their construction materials.

Qiang people long ago became experienced in mitigating the effects of earthquakes.

to improve their resistance to earthquakes,

Qiang- houses

were- built in a pyramid structure,

characterized- by a wide bottom

and- a narrow top.

The- walls in the bottom layer are 60 cm wide, and- those in the top layer, 20 to 30 cm wide. The- entire wall leans inwards,

towards- the middle.

The Qiang people, still getting over the shock and devastation of the Wenchuan earthquake,

Today - Taoping ancient Qiang Village

is- much more than a remarkable collection

of- buildings.

In a sense - the Qiang houses and watch towers have assumed a historical mission:

to- keep alive a unique architectural culture.

Architecture in its highest form incorporates into buildings

mankinds- respect for life,

and - lays a solid foundation

for- the survival

of- human beings

in- their rapidly-changing environment.

HOW A 2,000-YEAR-OLDVILLAGEOUTLASTED aKILLER 8.0 EARTHQUAKE

bySteffani CameronMay 13, 2013

On May 12th, 2008, a devastating 8.0 earthquake in Wenchuan County

laid- waste

to- China’s Sichuan Province,

leaving- more than 87,000 people

missing- or dead

With shocks felt more than 1,100 miles away in Beijing,

between- 5 million and 11 million people

were - left homeless,

Entire- towns

were- abandoned

after- the destruction

And yet, just 12 miles from the quake epicentre,

a - little 2,000-year-old village

called- Taoping

withstood- those two devastating minutes of- quaking

that- flattened nearby towns.

Taoping village How a 2,000 Year Old Village Outlasted a Killer 8.0 Earthquake

Taoping village (Photo: ozincq)

With construction begun in 111 BC, - Taoping enjoyed no seismic upgrading, no fancy modern technology when the quake struck.

There were no engineers- in hardhats masterminding the ancient construction.

These were “simple” stone buildings- erected by an ancient Chinese people calledthe Qiang.

But Taoping’s been toughing out quakes for centuries.

In- the 20th century alone,

Taoping- survived the Wenchuan quake,

Diexi’s- magnitude-7.5 earthquake in 1933,

and a 1976 quake- measuring 7.2 on the Richter

that- rattled Songpan-Pingwu.

Sure, some buildings were damaged, but other regional communities were reduced to rubble.

Even- Taoping Ancient Qiang Village’s

underground water aqueducts - survived the quake.

If this ancient village isn’t using fancy shocks and other things we’re incorporating for seismic upgrading today,

how’d they build- such a resilient settlement

that- could withstand

one- of history’s largest earthquakes ever?

There’s some pretty amazing stuff going on in those walls, and we could learn a little about it.

Ancient History & an Ancient People

China’s Qiang people - are a mountain-dwelling tribe

in - the Sichuan province.

They comprise one of China’s 56 officially-recognized ethnic groups

Like many other Chinese cultures, situation and alignment - were very important when the Qiang people settled.

They kept the mountains - to the north

and built with the village - facing water to the south. They chose an area - where running water was plentiful and - they built atop it.

TODAY, IF ONE LOOKS DOWN on the ‘TAOPING VILLAGE”

IT - APPEARS TO BE A CIRCLE

AND - ONE COULD LAY

THE - AGE-OLD BUDDHIST SYMBOL

OF- YIN-YAG

OVERTOP - AND SEE IT’S PATTERN

THERE ARE 8 GATES, 13 ALLEYS,

WHICH - IS SAID TO BE BOTH

FOR - GOOD COMMUNITY COMMUNICATIONS

AND - ALSO FOR DEFENSE-MINDED REASONS

MOST - STRUCTURES ARE A MINIMUM OF 2 FLOORS HIGH

as- the traditional Qiang home

is - comprised of three storeys.

On - the 1st would live the livestock,

on - the 2nd would be the living quarters,

and - the 3rd floor would be the grain & food storage room

There - were 9-storey towers

as- part of the village as well,

reaching - more than 100 feet.

SO HOW DOES a 2,000-PLUS-YEAR-OLD STONE BUILDINGS

3 - OR MORE STOREYS HIGH

WITHSTAND - A QUAKE

THAT - LEFT MILLIONS HOMELESS

IN - THE REGION?

IN THE 5 YEARS SINCE THE QUAKE

THE - QIANG METHOD OF BUILDING

HAS - GOTTEN SOME ATTENTION

AND - IT’S NOW WONDER WHY?

Read on for more some reasons -THIS LITTLE TOWN

THAT - COULD MANAGED

TO - SURVIVE

A - KILLER QUAKE

On Solid Ground

Constructed on the mountainside, the Qiang capitalized on surface that was tougher to build on, but gave a rock-solid foundation of, well, rock.

The valley land below was, as valleys tend to be, softer and more pliable, which might be great for farming, but not so much if you live in an earthquake-prone region like the Qiang do.

Favoring 8-to-12-foot-deep foundations of varying shapes, the Qiang insist structures be built upon solid bare rock, so no soft ground is under buildings, eliminating the risk of liquefaction during quakes.

“Trapezoid” For The Win, Alex

Without fail, every Qiang structure is narrower at the top than the base.

All four walls slope inward, helping to absorb shocks.

Taoping walls How a 2,000 Year Old Village Outlasted a Killer 8.0 Earthquake

Photo: gochengdoo.com

With towers reaching 100-plus feet, this isn’t a story about how some cute old little mud huts survived a one-off quake;

these are sophisticated structures for 500 years ago, let alone dating as far back 111 BC, and they’ve thrived through harsh mountain conditions for more than two millennia in a quake-prone region.

The wider-at-bottom, narrower-at-top approach was also true of the wall construction itself. For a standard three-story home, the base of the walls might be much as two feet thick, while the top of the structure might be as little as 8 to 10 inches thick, making load-bearing go where it’s supposed to go.

With rugged building materials and sloped-in tapering walls serving as an ode to trapezoids, these are already well-supported buildings.

But there’s a lot more to their construction than sloping walls inward to add extra support

Some Rocks Rock Harder

The ancient TaopingQiang village wasn’t just smart at building, they got lucky with the natural materials around them.

Both the natural stone and clay in the area are abundantly rich in potassium nitrate, which acts as a powerful bonding agent, and is also light, heat, and corrosion-resistant.

They weren’t content to just lay rocks on top of one another and call it a day.

The Qiang hand-chiselled every rock that was lain in each wall.

They weren’t just all square; no two rocks held the same shape.

They’d be paired according to angles and cuts.

Then, they didn’t lay the stones in either interlocking or fixed directions.

They laid each layer of stones in a different direction.

First lengthwise, then sideways, then lengthwise. This allowed for yet another level of shock-absorbing construction. Aided with the hardwoods found in the area that were used for beams and other supports inside the structure.

But there was another step that made it even more resilient.

Each storey of a building would be built and let to rest for a year, so everything would settle and bind well before more weight was set on top.

So, a three-story building would take three years, and so forth.

Together, They Stand

Another reason Taoping still stands today is because, in the ancient building style of the Qiang (it changed through the ages), the village’s buildings were all interconnected.

The community was built in an almost terraced fashion on a mountainside,

and the Qiang people’s style of bracing between buildings meant even more shock-absorption was harnessed.

If one building rocks a little, the other might temper the motion, and vice versa.

In the modern building style, independent homes don’t have that “shoulder” to lean on.

The Moral of the Story

The Qiang teach us things we’ve come to learn over thousands of years, only they learned them much sooner than most of us.

·         One, they teach us that there’s strength in community, especially when things get rocky.

·         Two, they remind us that quality materials make all the difference and taking the time to do it right means enjoying the payoffs for years to come.

·         Three, they demonstrate great reasons to look at history for lessons in construction, not just the modern trades journals.

·         Four, they show it’s imperative we understand the land we’re building on, that we recognize there isn’t a benefit to one-size-fits-all construction methodology, and when nature and design come together in harmony, it can be a powerful thing.

Today, we’re thrilled if a home is built to last 60 years,

but- these ancient Chinese,

with - no power tools,

no - formal education,

and - no building inspectors,

they-  managed to build homes

with - their bare hands,

primitive - tools,

and - found objects,

and - their homes

have - lasted more than 60 generations.

It seems we have some improving to do.

If you’re as fascinated by this story as I was when I learned about this village and its people last week,

you can watch this three part series on the Qiang building style

on YouTube, beginning here.

The Qiang worship 5 major gods, 12 lesser gods, some tree gods,

AND - NUMEROUS STONES

were - also worshiped

A special god is also worshiped in every village and locality,

who are mentioned by name in the sacred chants of the Qiang priests.

MUBYASEI, also known ABBA CHI & as the GOD of HEAVEN

is also considered

as- the supreme god.

This term is also used to refer to a male ancestor god, Abba Sei. In certain places, Shan Wang, the mountain god, is considered to represent the supreme god. The Qiang people have also adopted many practices of the Taoists as well.

For some Qiangs, most White Stones

were - placed

on - the corners

of - their roofs or towers,

as - a good luck symbol

for - the sun.

A square stone pagoda, which is located on the edge of many Qiang villages and on the top of a nearby hill as well.

The pagoda is usually over two meters high and its uppermost part is inlaid with a circle of small white stones.

A larger white stone is also placed at the pinnacle as well.

A small pagoda is also sometimes built on the roof of a house, with a pottery jar that contained five varieties of grain is placed within the pagoda.

On top of the pagoda, a white stone is placed together with ox and sheep horns.

By tradition, the door of a Qiang house is supposed to face south and the pagoda is built on the northern end of the roof in line with the door.

Every morning, the Qiang family will burn incense sticks or cedar twigs in the pagoda and kowtow to it,

praying - for the protection

of - the family

by - the god

of - the white stone.

However, with modernization,

worship- of the White Stones

is- not nearly as common

as- it used to be.

Does anyone know what hidden manna and white stone mean in this verse?

A white stone was used to gain admission to certain events in Roman times. That would imply that those who overcome will be granted admission to the Kingdom.

Source: Found a reference here.

That lists its sources as David Stern's Jewish New Testament Commentary and Dr. William Smith's Dictionary of the Bible from 1872.

I was also thinking about the manna. As we know, that was given in the Exodus while they wandered.

Some of the manna was placed in a pot and stored in the ark of the covenant. The ark disappeared from earth, but is mentioned in Rev 11:9 as being seen within God's temple. As your question refers to an earlier part of Revelation, John could have had that manna from the hidden ark in mind.

Hope that helps, but Revelation's symbols make it hard to interpret. Ironic that it's name means "to show that which is hidden."

I need to find a source, but I've been told early Church fathers associated the hidden manna with the Eucharist - Christ's food for his Church, the people of the New Covenant. – DanJan 6 at 6:30

"He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth, saving he that receiveth it." Revelation 2:17

Those in the church at Pergamos who overcame would be given to eat of the hidden manna. This hidden manna is the revelation of God that has been hidden in His Word from the foundation of the world to be revealed in this last time. Then He promised a white stone to the overcomers. This white stone would contain a new name that no man knows, except the one who receives it.

The basic Greek word translated stone is LITHOS.

This word has six derivatives. It is used eighty-two times in the New Testament. Another word translated stone is PETROS and is used 161 times as "Peter" and one time as "stone".

When we consider the white stone that was spoken to John -

the word used for the phrase white stone was PSEPHOS. This word is only used twice in the New Testament and only translated once as stone. The other time it was used is in the book of Acts.

"Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice (PSEPHOS) against them." Acts 26:10

Paul stated, "I gave my voice against them . . . ". The word voice is PSEPHOS. Paul gave his consenting vote to the death of the saints.

This same word PSEPHOS was translated stone in Revelation 2:17.

The word white is LEUKOS and means "brilliant from whiteness, dazzling white." This was the white used to describe the angel's raiment at Jesus' tomb. This same white was used to describe Jesus' garments when He was transfigured before Peter, James, and John on the Mount of Transfiguration.

"And His raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them." Mark 9:3

A fuller is a launderer. No fuller on earth could clean garments as white as the Spiritual garments that clothed Jesus. This same brilliance was used to describe the white stone that was revealed to John. White always represents righteousness.

In ancient times, the white stone

was used in many ways. When someone was accused of a wrong doing and taken to court - - - when they were acquitted they were given a white stone as a symbol of their innocence. They could show anyone their white stone to prove their innocency. We can show our innocency before God by putting on the Robe of Righteousness. Paul revealed to the Romans:

"For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous." Romans 5:19

We are made righteous by our obedience to Jesus and the voice of the Father. Jesus was obedient unto death on the cross. When we accept Jesus' shed blood, we are made the righteousness of God through the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit. Paul spoke to the Corinthians,

"For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him." II Corinthians 5:21

We are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. He has acquitted us from our sin, that we may overcome the sin nature.

The white stone was also used in elections.

A person voting was given a white stone and a black stone.

The white stone meant acceptance - - - the black stone meant rejection. I

n later years, marbles were used. Most are familiar with the term "blackballed". This meant rejection.

Paul wrote to the Ephesians:

"To the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He hath made us accepted in the Beloved." Ephesians 1:6

We are accepted in the Beloved, and we now walk in the praise of His glory and grace.

The white stone was given to victors in athletic events.

Sometimes the victors were given white stones with the name of the event or the winner of the event inscribed on the stone.

 Paul related:

"Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain." I Corinthians 9:24

We are all in a race, and we run that we may receive the prize that is set before us. Paul stated:

"I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:14

"And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible." I Corinthians 9:25

Those who run in this race must be temperate in all things. Temperance is a fruit of the Spirit. We are not in this race to receive a corruptible crown. The word corruptible means "to rot". The crown we desire is the crown of life. In order to receive this crown, we must finish the race. No one ever won the prize who did not finish the race. In Paul's final letter to Timothy, just before being taken to the chopping block, he proclaimed,

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing." II Timothy 4:7-8

Paul had finished the race. He had kept the faith to the end. Paul was promised an incorruptible crown, a crown of righteousness, the white stone of victory, the righteousness of God. Paul was proclaimed the winner of the race. But all who finish the race will be declared winners.

Paul also declared:

". . . and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing." II Timothy 4:8

The promise of an incorruptible crown is to all those who finish the race. Another use of the white stone was that a white stone was often given to honored guests. It was generally inscribed with the host's name. The special guest who received the white stone could use it to purchase, or to order the host's servants to do as they asked. It was used as a sign of authority and power granted by the host. All things that belonged to the host were at the disposal of the special guest. We have this promise in Christ Jesus our Lord.

"He that overcometh shall inherit all things: and I will be his God, and he shall be My son." Revelation 21:7

The overcomers are those special guests at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. These are the inheritors of all that belong to the Father. These are the Christs in the earth today. Paul stated,

"And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." Galatians 3:29

Before we can become heirs we must be overcomers in God's kingdom realm. Paul further wrote to the Galatians,

"And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ." Galatians 4:6-7

When the overcomers come into the sonship realm, they will no longer be servants, but heirs. The servants will not inherit with the sons. If we are inheritors, then we will have already overcome the old Adam nature, the carnal mind, and the desires of the flesh. This is the only way we can come into sonship. This is the only way we will become joint heirs with Christ. When this has been accomplished in our lives, we, too, as special guests, will be given our white stone. Then everything that belongs to the Father will be at our disposal. He will then give us power and authority to rule and reign with Him.

Jesus revealed this promise to John:

"To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne." Revelation 3:21

The promise of ruling and reigning is made only to the overcomers, and they, alone, will sit with Him in His throne. This is our place of authority in the kingdom.

+1, but your answer is rather prolix. Could you cut out those parts that are less directly related to the question? – KazarkJun 8 '12 at 15:32

This is possibly tangential to the original question, since the asker's denomination was not specified, but in LDS/Mormon thought, the white stone is (literally) a white stone used as a Urim and Thummim for the reception of revelation:

This earth, in its sanctified and immortal state, will be made like unto crystal and will be a Urim and Thummim to the inhabitants who dwell thereon, whereby all things pertaining to an inferior kingdom, or all kingdoms of a lower order, will be manifest to those who dwell on it; and this earth will be Christ’s.

Then the white stone mentioned in Revelation 2:17, will become a Urim and Thummim to each individual who receives one, whereby things pertaining to a higher order of kingdoms will be made known; and a white stone is given to each of those who come into the celestial kingdom, whereon is a new name written, which no man knoweth save he that receiveth it. (D&C 130:9--11)

The promises of reward to the churches in Revelation revolve on intimacy with our Lord. That is, the greatest satisfaction a living creature can have now and in eternity is the very intimacy with the living God. Each of the promises of reward hinges on some aspect of greater intimacy with the Lord as an eternal reward for our perseverance in the here-and-now on earth.

When the son of David (Solomon) built the temple in the earthly Jerusalem, the visible theocratic kingdom was centered on the presence and power of God. When Jesus (the son of David) built the temple in the heavenly Jerusalem, the invisible heavenly kingdom was centered on the presence and power of God, which is indwelt by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in the body of believers on earth.

In the New Covenant, believers are made one with his body (Rom 12:5; 1 Cor 12:12; 1 Cor 12:27), and so we become temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:19). Therefore the body of believers also comprises a temple in heaven (Rev 3:12 and Rev 15:5), and thus all believers whether on heaven or earth are permanent priests to this temple (1 Pet 2:5; 1 Pet 2:9; Rev 1:6).

These offers of manna and the stone with the name "known but to God" are offers of private intimacy within the temple. The manna is the food of angels (Ps 78:25), which descended from heaven because God commanded that it should (thus we literally live because of the words that have to come out of God's mouth to command living sustenance for man - ref. Deut 8:3). The manna is therefore "bread from heaven" (Ex 16:4). Its location is within the ark of the Covenant, and therefore lies within the very inner recesses of the Holy of Holies (Ex 16:33). We will "know" our creator in greater intimacy through exclusive access to this very word/bread/manna in heaven.

The heavenly temple is comprised of believers, who are the living stones of this temple (1 Peter 2:4-5). The name on the white stone is your identity as part of this temple, or body of Christ. Your identity is therefore defined by what the Lord determines. This identity is not shared with others (Rev 2:17), but is your own identity as an individual. Since ones identity in heaven will not depend on what others think, the identity is immutable and eternal. The reward will be the specific name that the Lord will give you. (Can you hardly wait?)

In summary, for the one who overcomes, the greatest promises of eternal reward in heaven are not "material," but are relational, which means that the greatest rewards are those which will provide us the closest and therefore the most satisfying intimacy with our creator and savior.

A white stone was given to the High Priest in Israel worn in front upon the ceremonial robes when seeking the Will of God on the behalf of the Jewish nation.

This is not to be mistaken with the breastplate holding the 12 stones representing the 12 tribes of Israel.

They called it an interpreter or seer stone by which the wearer could by looking into it find knowledge or revelation from God.

see "Exodus" An individual worthy and prepared and proven righteous on his way to live with Heavenly Father would have his own seer stone - it is so because your new name will be on it,

pardon the comparison: a student who has graduated and become a karate "Dan" wears his black belt to show his achievement and by tradition his name and date of being awarding such a status is marked on the belt in traditional script

China: Up to 8,500 die in killer earthquake

Earthquake cloud

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Earthquake cloudsIn chapter 32 of his work BrihatSamhita, Indian scholar Varahamihira (505 – 587) discussed a number of signs warning of earthquakes:

Unusual animal behavior, astrological influences, underground movements of water

and extraordinary clouds occurring a week before the earthquake.

Since 1994, ZhonghaoShou, a retired Chinese chemist living in New York, has made dozens of earthquake predictions based on cloud patterns in satellite images, and claims to have a 70% accuracy.

Stress and friction in the ground can vaporize water long before the earthquake happens,

according to Shou, and clouds formed through these mechanisms are distinctly shaped.

He has identified five different types of earthquake cloud, including “line-shaped”, “feather-shaped”, and “lantern shaped” clouds.

He claims that an earthquake will take place within 103 days of the appearence of one of these clouds, and that the average time is 30 days.

On December 25, 2003, one day before the Bam earthquake, he predicted an earthquake of mag. 5.5+ within 60 days over a fault line in Iran.

Historical records have indicated a possible correlation between clouds and earthquakes in the ancient civillizations of Rome, India, and China.

Curious cloud formations linked to quakes

CAN unusual clouds signal the possibility of an impending earthquake?

That’s the question being asked following the discovery of distinctive cloud formations above an active fault in Iran before each of two large earthquakes occurred.

Geophysicists GuangmengGuo and Bin Wang of Nanyang Normal University in Henan, China,

noticed a gap in the clouds in satellite images from December 2004 that precisely matched the location of the main fault in southern Iran.

It stretched for hundreds of kilometres, was visible for several hours and remained in the same place, although the clouds around it were moving.

At the same time, thermal images of the ground showed that the temperature was higher along the fault.

69 days later, on 22 February 2005, an earthquake of magnitude 6.4 hit the area, killing more than 600 people

In December 2005, a similar formation again appeared in the clouds for a few hours.

64 days later, an earthquake of magnitude 6 shook the region (International Journal of Remote Sensing, vol 29, p 1921).

Guo and Wang suggest

that an eruption of hot gases from inside the fault could have caused water in the clouds to evaporate.

Another idea is that ionisation may be involved:

Friedemann Freund at the NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, recently demonstrated that when rocks are squeezed, positively charged ions form in the air above.

The trouble is that ions usually help to form clouds, not dissipate them.

The authors say that if recognisable cloud formations precede large quakes,

they could be used for prediction, but other seismologists are sceptical. “There is no physical model that explains why something would suddenly occur two months before an earthquake, and then shut off and not occur again,” says Mike Blanpied of the US Geological Survey’s Earthquake Hazards Program.

Default Depth

Here is quote about depth from USGS

"Sometimes when depth is poorly constrained by available seismic data, the location program will set the depth at a fixed value. For example, 33 km is often used as a default depth for earthquakes determined to be shallow, but whose depth is not satisfactorily determined by the data, whereas default depths of 5 or 10 km are often used in mid-continental areas and on mid-ocean ridges since earthquakes in these areas are usually shallower than 33 km."

But I do believe HAARP can cause earthquakes.

Interesting coincidences:

12/26/03: Bam earthquake; 6.6 richter (Note: never name a city "bam" or "kaboom" or "kapow".  You would be tempting fate.  (Note note: Actually, this was an ancient city that looked really cool and 70,000 people died.))

12/26/04: Indian Ocean earthquake; 9.1 richter; resulting tsunamis kill 225,000.  The longest lasting quake ever recorded: 10 minutes.

12/26/06: Hengchun earthquake; 7.1 richter;

"Stop judging by appearances, but judge justly."

HAARP & Earthquakes

But I do believe HAARP can cause earthquakes.

I've seen lots of people say this, but none can provide even a modicum of science to back it up.  I'm sceptical about such theories, precisely because of the lack of any underpinning scientific theory.

The only way I could see it happening is if the tectonic plates adjacent to the fault could in some way be made to resonate.  To do that would require a knowledge of the unique resonant frequency of the plate at the fault. It would also require immense amount of energy, far more than HAARP could ever deliver.

An earthquake on the scale of Sichuan releases in the order of 45,000,000,000 megajoules of energy. It simply doesn't add up that it is possible to trigger that release with a 300megawatt shortwave transmitter.  An underground nuclear explosion would be a far more plausible candidate, but even so, there is insufficient evidence to solidify that theory.

Tesla's Earthquake Machine

NIKOLA TESLA’S EARTHQUAKE MACHINE, VIBRATION, NATURAL FREQUENCIES & BLDG. DEMOLITION- Excerpt from the New YorkWorld Telegram, July 11, 1935 -

Nikola Tesla revealed that an earthquake- which drew police and ambulances to the region of his laboratory at 48 E. Houston St., New York, in 1898,

was the result of a little machine- he was experimenting with at the time which "you could put in your overcoat pocket."

The bewildered newspapermen pounced upon this- as at least one thing they could understand

and "the father of modern electricity" told what had happened as follows:

"I was experimenting with vibrations.

I had one of my machines going and I wanted to see if I could get it in tune with the vibration of the building.

I put it up notch after notch.

There was a peculiar cracking sound.

"I asked my assistants where did the sound come from.

They did not know.

I put the machine up a few more notches.

There was a louder cracking sound.

I knew I was approaching the vibration of the steel building.

I pushed the machine a little higher.

"Suddenly all the heavy machinery in the place was flying around.

I grabbed a hammer and broke the machine.

The building would have been about our ears in another few minutes.

Outside in the street there was pandemonium.

"The police and ambulances arrived.

I told my assistants to say nothing.

We told the police it must have been an earthquake.

That's all they ever knew about it."

Some shrewd reporter asked Dr. Tesla at this point what he would need to destroy the Empire State Building

and the doctor replied:

"Vibration will do anything.

It would only be necessary to step up the vibrations of the machine to fit the natural vibration of the building and the building would come crashing down.

That's why soldiers break step crossing a bridge."

He put his little vibrator in his coat-pocket and went out to hunt a half-erected steel building.

Down in the Wall Street district, he found one&endash;ten stories of steel framework without a brick or a stone laid around it.

He clamped the vibrator to one of the beams, and fussed with the adjustment until he got it.

Tesla said finally the structure began to creak and weave

and the steel-workers came to the ground panic-stricken, believing that there had been an earthquake.

Police were called out.

Tesla put the vibrator in his pocket and went away.

Ten minutes more and he could have laid the building in the street.

And, with the same vibrator he could have dropped the Brookly Bridge into the East River in less than an hour.

"Mythbusters" set out to build and test Tesla's patented and legendary "earthquake machine",

which weighed only six pounds.

Tesla claimed he built one and attached it to a steel beam in his large building.

He then tuned the machine, searching for a frequency of oscillation that would resonate with the steel structure.

After a while he found the right frequency and the entire building started to quake violently.

He had to take a hammer to the machine to get it to stop.

Residents of the building evacuated and the police and fire department reported to the scene.

The hosts of the show, who set out each week to, more or less, scientifically disprove common "myths" and legends, didn't follow the patent exactly and made two machines that didn't work.

Then another guy built it and they finally had something that was producing results.

A six pound, hand-held machine that was causing a massive steel beam to oscillate violently.

They found a large steel bridge to test it on (I'm not sure which bridge it was, but it was massive).

After tuning the machine extensively,

they - finally found

a - frequency

that - resonated

with - the structure

and - everything

on - the bridge

was - vibrating

A six pound machine was producing a rythmic vibration over a hundred feet from its location.

They- said it felt like

A - semi-truck

Was - going by...constantly.

Nevertheless, they "disproved the myth",

 because- it didn't exactly cause

an- earthquake.

Maybe not, but something else could.

AZ to Claymore re HAARP

Over the years, I have read far more about HAARP, ionospheric heaters, and EMR effects than I have about any other topic, bar none.

I don’t subscribe to any of the wild theories about HAARP, (e.g. the ability to cause earthquakes) but the potential for bizarre uses is there.

At least, HAARP provides fodder for sci-fi buffs.

For example, the resonant EM frequencies of the earth-ionosphere cavity peak at various intervals (see

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schumann_resonance )

one of which is 7.8 hertz, the same frequency as the human brain’s “alpha rhythms.”

This opens the door to amusing speculation about “planetary brainwaves,” and the possibility of using EMR to “entrain” mass populations. Crazy but fun.

You asked about verified transmitters other than the ones you listed.

I presume you mean ionospheric heaters, not passive ionosondes, whose antennas are so numerous that they coat the planet like metallic fur.

The University of Tokyo operates a heater.

The Navy operates HIPAS near Fairbanks.

There’s a heater near the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Russia has the Suraionospheric heating facility, in Vasilsursk near Nizhniy Novgorod.

Also, when the U.S. lease on the air base in Manta Ecuador runs out in 2009,

and the gringos are kicked out, the Chinese may take it over (President Correa has offered it to them).

The Chinese have expressed an interest in building a heater there for equatorial research.

There’s a scarcity of info about heaters in the southern hemisphere.

Surely they must exist, since the earth’s magnetosphere dips down in the Polar Regions, taking part of the ionosphere with it.

(This makes heaters easier to use.) I would expect heaters to exist in South Africa and Argentina, but I cannot confirm this.

Are you sure the NSA listening facility at Pine Gap has a heater?

The Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) does not involve heaters, but its high frequency backscatter radar can affect the ionosphere.

That is, its radars are more assertive that the ubiquitous ionosondes.

The network includes 11 radars in the northern hemisphere, and 7 in the southern hemisphere (Antarctica, New Zealand, and the Kerguelen Islands. See the wikipedia entry under “SuperDarn.”)

As far as all these gadgets being somehow linked by supercomputers in a global network,

that was an early dream of HAARP enthusiasts, but it never came about.

The real networks are in passive international monitoring of the ionosphere and the magnetosphere.

Could HAARP have caused the China quake?

Well, its microwaves can boil a section of sky, but they’re nowhere near powerful enough to heat up sections of the earth’s crust, or cause it to resonate.

ELF waves can totally penetrate the planet, but they’re not microwaves.

HAARP could theoretically cause temporary radio blackouts over selected areas,

and even cut a brief hole in the ionosphere, allowing the sun to fry the ground,

but let’s remember that the sun itself hits the earth with zillions of times more energy than millions of HAARP transmitters could.

AZ, Sullivan: China report

I have no idea what to make of this, but it just showed up out of China, says there was a nuclear explosion in Sichuan on the 12th.

If so, you called it Sullivan.

Greg Bacon

P.S. HAARP alters the ionosphere, not the earth's surface, causing weather patterns to get screwy.

Look up an article written back in 1996 by the US Air Force called, "Owning the Weather by 2025."

The earthquakes are more than likely some bizarre experiment with electro-magnetic waves.

The Russian experiment is called "Operation Woodpecker."

Be sure to click on the link that has the following quote:

"Others are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves.

So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations.

It's real, and that's the reason- why we have to intensify our efforts, and that's why this is so important."

Operation Woodpecker

The Russian experiment

is called "Operation Woodpecker."

As far as I can recall, Operation Woodpecker was conceived as an over-the-horizon radar system.

The numbers game

The Sichuan earthquake occurred on May 12, 2008 exactly 88 days before the start of the Bejing Olympics on 08/08/08!

There are HAARP installations interspersed around the globe - Gokona, Alaska, Pine Gap, Australia, Greenland, Norway, and most likely in the Falklands or on South Georgia in the Sandwich Islands.

Supposedly on Cypress too.

Does anyone have any other verified transmitters? I'm trying to model how this thing works and I just don't have enough in the Southern Hemisphere.

It has to be on Pitcairn Islands

The third Southern Transmitter has to be in the Pitcairn Islands.

I think the did some kind of clearence on one of those Islands a few years back - the incestuous Mutiny on the bounty decendants.

Scientists puzzled by foreshock-less SW China quake

BEIJING, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Some scientists were puzzled by the unusual quiet period of quakes

before the 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwest China.

But others believe there had been precursors, which stood as warnings for a major quake.[...]

He said there were no short-term anomaly of animals, underground water and other typical precursors, which can lead to a prediction of a major earthquake.[...]

Besides all those, a Taiwan satellite recorded a sharp drop inionospheric density

above Sichuan before the Wenchuan earthquake, according to a Taiwan newspaper.

The newspaper said that the province's Formosa-3 satellite

recordedionospheric density in the atmosphere of 1.2 million electrically charged particles

in some 1,000 square kilometers around Wenchuan six to 15 days before the May 12 earthquake.

On May 11, the eve of the quake, ionospheric density had dropped by half to 600,000 charged particles, it said.

Scientists Identified Earthquake Faults In Sichuan, China

ScienceDaily (May 19, 2008) — Only last summer research published by earth scientists in the international journal Tectonics

concluded that geological faults in the Sichuan Basin, China "are sufficiently long to sustain a strong ground-shaking earthquake, making them potentially serious sources of regional seismic hazard."

An international team of scientists including Dr. Alexander Densmore (Institute of Hazard and Risk Research, Durham University), Dr. Mike Ellis (Head of Science for Climate Change at the British Geological Survey)

And colleagues from research institutes in Chengdu, carefully mapped and analysed a series of geologically young faults that cross Sichuan Province like recently healed scars.

The team mapped the densely populated Sichuan Basin and adjacent mountains using what is known as 'tectonic geomorphology'.

This technique can demonstrate significant changes in ground movement over time, such as observations of offset river channels, disrupted floodplains, abnormally shaped valleys and uplifted landscape features.

These subtle signals of deformation, when combined with the ability to measure the age of the disfigured landscapes (using cosmogenic nuclides that bombard the Earth from all corners of the universe), produced surprising results.

The recent earthquake in Sichuan occurred under some of the steepest and most rugged mountains in the world,

theLongmen Shan:

the Dragon's Gate Mountains.

This dramatic range, steeper than the Himalayas,

is the upturned rim of the eastern edge of Tibet,

a plateau that has risen to 5 km in response to the slow but unstoppable collision of India with Asia

that began about 55 million years ago

and which continues unabated today
