Bhutto apparently wrote a letter to then President Pervez Musharraf in response to allegations from the President that there were groups out there that wanted her dead. It’s feasible that the Pakistani Taliban or other groups had a gripe against Ms. Bhutto but she claims that it would be someone else financing them and that someone would be a high profile member of Musharraf’s cabinet.
One person she mentions apparently has had dealings with Omar Sheikh – you know – the man who killed Osama bin Laden. This snippet of information was casually dropped in as if it was common knowledge and Frost as well glazes over the information. The BBC later censors the video.
As far as the world knew Osama bin Laden was killed by a covert US joint ops team on 2 May 2011; but the video in which Bhutto alleges his already demise was aired in November 2007, four years prior.
Who is Omar Sheikh? Ahmad Omar Saeed Sheikh, a British national, was educated at the London School of Economics and had an alleged career in both the MI6 and Pakistan’s Inter-Service Intelligence Agency (ISI). Musharraf, in his book ‘In the line of Fire’ wrote about Omar Sheikh, saying that at some point, he went rogue. In 2002 he was charged and sentenced to death for the murder of Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped and beheaded the same year. His guilt for this crime has been denied by Pearl’s widow and CIA operatives but it was apparent that he had some spurious connections.
However, maybe the late former Prime Minister simply misspoke. Earlier in the interview, Bhutto names Hamza bin laden, Osama’ son as a name Musharraf provides as her possible garroter and Sheikh was known for murdering Daniel Pearl. She may have just meant to say ‘the man who killed Daniel Pearl’ but bin Laden’s name was on her mind – an argument David Griffin noted in his 2009 book ‘Osama bin Laden: Dead or Alive?’ Furthermore, she speaks about Osama bin Laden in terms of him being still being alive in subsequent interviews, including the next day on CNN.
Bhutto’s intentions will not be known as she was in fact assassinated two months after the interview in question, the investigation around which has been so blundered that we don’t know if the analysis on her own assassination was quite right, even eight years later. For now the man credited with the murder of Osama bin Laden is a JSOC Navy SEAL whose identity is covered with non-disclosure legislation. Unless Fox News can offer a high enough price.
