The Russian leader warned that tensions between the United States and N Korea are on the verge of sparking a devasting worldwide conflict. In a major intervention from Mr. Putin, he urged both Washington and Pyongyang to "tone down their rhetoric". Speaking about the UN sanctions against the hermit state, the Kremlin chief said that imposing new restrictions would be "useless" and "ridiculous" and would only cause millions of innocent North Korean citizens to suffer rather than halt Kim Jong-un's nuclear program. Putin went on to take a swipe at the UN Security Council, saying: "Our position on this issue, just like on every other issue, is principled. "It's just that we don't want to be on the same [sanctions] list as North Korea, even though this is ridiculous, this doesn't make any sense. "No, that's not the point. The reason is that the sanctions regime has been exhausted, it doesn't work, it's useless. "The North Korean government is not going to change their policy, whereas millions of people will suffer." Express reports: Speaking after a summit in China, he also condemned the United States and North Korea for their warmongering rhetoric over the crisis. President Donald Trump recently threatened to unleash "fire and fury" if Kim continued to threaten to attack the US island of Guam. Mr. Putin said: "Ramping up military hysteria in such conditions is senseless, it's a dead end. It could lead to a global catastrophe and a huge loss of human life. "There is no other way to solve the North Korean nuclear issue, save that of peaceful dialogue." Kim is convinced North Korea's nuclear program is the only way to ward off apparent threats from the US, Mr. Putin added. He told reporters: "As I told my colleagues yesterday, they will eat grass but will not stop their program as long as they do not feel safe. "What can restore their security? The restoration of international law." Despite Mr. Putin's opposition, South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha today said China could back further sanctions on North Korea. After holding talks with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, she told MPs: "I could sense that China could be open to more sanctions." And during a phone call yesterday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US leader Mr. Trump called for "further and stricter sanctions".
