But darn it! Give Dennis Rodman a chance!
Ex-NBA star Dennis Rodman said Wednesday he wanted to “straighten things out” between his BFF Kim Jong Un and President Trump as the two leaders face off over the rogue regime’s nuke program.
Rodman, aka The Worm, told the British TV show “Good Morning Britain” that he had skied and sung karaoke with the pint-size despot, and was just the guy to bring peace to the tense Korean peninsula.
“For me to go over there and see [Kim] as much as I have, I basically hang out with him all the time. We laugh, we sing karaoke, we do a lot of cool things together. We ride horses, we hang out, we go skiing, we hardly ever talk politics and that’s the good thing,” said Rodman, who at 6-foot-7 is a full foot taller than the Korean dictator.
“I just want to try to straighten things out for everyone to get along together.”
The former baller — known for his relentless rebounding and multi-hued Afros — also praised Trump, even though the president could be “a little bit crazy sometimes.”
There’s not much serious to be said about a story like this, but it does remind me of something. Remember during the Cold War, when liberals insisted that we could avoid nuclear war with the Soviets by sitting down and talking to them, and understanding them as people? Remember Sting imploring us via song to be sure that the Russians love their children too?
The delusion has been with us for a long time that the only impediment to peace is the failure of people to sit down and recognize our shared humanity.
The Soviets then, just like Putin today, kept those missiles at the ready because they had strategic priorities that were in conflict with ours. Personal relationships were irrelevant. Reagan and Gorbachev had a great personal relationship, but our nations were still rivals because we were misaligned strategically. The Soviets wanted certain things, as the Russians do now, and we could not let them have those things.
People sitting down and talking doesn’t do a damn thing unless it changes those geopolitical dynamics. Personal love and understanding means nothing in the world we’re talking about.
Yet it’s always been a powerful fantasy, to think that two rival leaders could open up their hearts to each other, shed tears and save us all from the fear of annihilation. And Dennis Rodman seems like just the kind of guy who would believe it. Maybe if you had played for both the Pistons and the Bulls, you’d believe it too. Or maybe that would be the very reason you’d know better.
At any rate, none of it means a thing here because Kim Jong Un is a total lunatic. President Trump doesn’t need to get to know him. He needs to find a way to topple him from power before he decides he’s waited long enough and he fires those nuclear missiles of his at us. Unless Dennis Rodman can get into that palace in Pyongyang and slip some poison into his buddy’s coffee, there’s nothing he can do to help.
