At a conference in Tel Aviv on Friday, former CIA Director David Petraeus warned of a “nightmare” scenario in which the disbursement of weapons in the Middle East could provide terrorists with the ability to shoot down civilian airliners.
There was no shortage of topics broached by Petraeus, including Palestinian-Israeli peace talks and Iran’s nuclear ambitions. But former CIA Director David Petraeus became most vehement in his remarks when speaking of the implications of surface-to-air terrorist strikes.
His warning is likely connected with the acquiring of MANPADS, or Man-Portable-Air-Defense-Systems, by terrorists following the NATO action against Gadhafi’s forces in Libya that helped to end his rule. Militias were able to steal from Gadhafi’s hoard of MANPADS that are believed to have numbered between 15,000 and 20,000. CBS News reported the U.S. was unable to secure “thousands” of the weapons.
CBS also quoted a “well-placed source” revealing that hundreds of missiles were able to be tracked going to the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, the Al Qaeda franchise based in Algeria considered to be one of the most serious threats to the U.S.
Petraeus referenced a video made by the Ansar Jerusalem terrorist group which claimed to have fired a surface-to-air missile at an Egyptian helicopter. He referred to the capability of shooting down a helicopter as “a big deal.”
“As you know, that was always our worst nightmare, that a civilian airliner would be shot down by one. Which is why we were so concerned when they moved around,” he said.
Petraeus was speaking at the annual conference of the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University.
