The 18-year study revealed some interesting findings.

Good news for the men who take pleasure… into their own hands. According to new research conducted by Harvard University, published in European Urology, men who climax 21 times or more per month may have a decreased risk of developing prostate cancer. In some cases, men’s likelihood of contracting the disease was reduced by one-third!

For the study, 31,925 men over an 18-year period were given questionnaires obtaining information on ejaculation frequency during the year of which they were surveyed. Men between the ages of 20-29 and 40-49 were surveyed.

Researchers found a correlation between the number of times a man masturbates and the incidence of prostate cancer cases. As IFLScience reports, previous studies have shown that a healthy sex life wards off cancer, but this new information suggests there is a “golden number” for how many times a man should climax per month. Though it is unconfirmed, some researchers believe orgasm flushes out cancer-determining toxins which might build up in the prostate.

Though more research undoubtedly needs to be conducted, the development is an intriguing one considering one in seven men in the U.S. are expected to develop cancer in their lifetimes. Though that statistic is lower than many other cancers, it is still a serious diagnosis which can lead to death if left untreated.

If a man seeks to decrease his risk for prostate cancer, he can choose to eat more color-rich, organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and sprouted grains, and keep his consumption of grass-fed meats and eggs to a minimum. Additionally, mindfulness practices and exercise have been shown to decrease people’s risk of developing cancer in the long-term.

Of course, gentlemen now have the go-ahead to masturbate — for health, of course.
